5 Common Dental Emergencies…and how to prevent them

1. Emergency Toothache

Pain is always subject to the person experiencing the toothache. If the pain is bad enough to be considered severe than you may need to go to an emergency dental clinic. If the pain is so bad that it’s preventing you from sleeping, or other daily activities such as eating or drinking, then you should definitely consider seeking emergency dental care.

To prevent toothaches, a proper daily oral health regimen is an important weapon to defend against toothaches. These tactics include; daily brushing, daily flossing, avoiding excessive sugar intake, and limiting sugary drinks. If you experience sensitivity to hot and cold you may consider consulting one of our dentists about what to do to cure the temperature sensitivity.

2. Broken/chipped/fractured teeth

To prevent breaking your teeth, you should try to avoid biting down to hard on your food, and grinding your teeth (bruxism). If do any kind of activity that has intense physical strain and impact, such as; football, basketball, rugby, etc. then you should wear a mouth guard to cushion the impact. If possible you should wear a custom-fitted mouthguard from Smiles Dental Group, this type of mouthguard is more expensive than other over-the-counter, and off-the-shelf options but they will provide you with the best protection.

3. Knocked Out Teeth (Dental Avulsion)

If you practice all the same things mentioned for broken teeth, it will definitely help to decrease the chance of outright knocking out your teeth. Another way to prevent dental avulsion is to try to stay away from more risky “extreme” activities. this could include but are not limited to activities like:

  • Intense mountain biking
  • Dirt biking
  • Playing full impact hockey
  • Downhill longboarding
  • Mixed martial arts

If you do insist on living dangerously, please make sure you wear all the protective equipment that is recommended. You should always wear at least a helmet when doing any of these sports.

4. lost filling or crown and broken orthodontics (braces)

The previous preventative measures go for this emergency too. However; you should also make sure the dental clinic your going to does quality work. A knocked out filling or crown may simply be the result of a sub-par dental practice.

5. Dental Abscess

A dental abscess can be prevented with good oral health practices and making sure you get any toothache looked at before it becomes a dental abscess if there isn’t one present already.

Sometimes when you get a bad dental injury it might not have been your fault at all and was going to happen regardless of how good your oral care is. However; lots of emergencies happen because the care was neglected and it became to late to fix.
