Should I go to the emergency room for a toothache?

Most dental emergencies are not severe enough to go to an emergency room. For example, if you have an infected abscess our emergency clinic can operate on it; however, if you are in a position where you can’t get to our emergency clinic, then the ER may be a valid alternative.

Other dental emergencies that may require an ER instead of a dental clinic might include the following:

  • Unbearable pain around your neck or jaw
  • Oral bleeding that has gone on longer than usual

If you have time to call our emergency line at (587) 410-5766, our talented dentists are likely able to take care of the issue, this way we can help alleviate the stress at the ER.

The ER may be more costly than the dental clinic as well, at Smiles Dental Group, all our fees are below the Alberta Dental Guide fees. Since our fees are so low, it will save you time for shopping around to get the most value for your money… If it really is an emergency there won’t be any time to call multiple clinics.

How serious is the tooth pain… really

If you have a very serious toothache then the choice between an emergency room and dental clinic may be up to your interpretation. Smiles Dental Group can handle lots of dental emergencies as we are specifically set up to do so. If you are in pain you should call us first at the number listed above to see what our staff recommends.

If you are able to make it to our emergency clinic we always recommend considering that as your first option. Our emergency is always open, 24/7 – 365 days per year so you never have to worry if we are available. We always do our absolute best to get our patients booked for the day of the emergency or the day after.

If you have tooth pain but it is only minor, we recommend calling our regular dental line at (587) 410-5766.
